Deacons of Dixieland reiuin to Midway StageThe Deacons of Dixieland will perform at the Midway Stage at the Huntingdon County Fair Monday,Aug. 10, with shows at 6 and 8 p.m. This is a return engagement for the band. The Deacons were formed by the late John Kepler in 1S88 in State College to play Dixieland as a Christian music ministry. They have their standards and also play hymns, blues, waltzes, polkas and even a few country tunes — in a happy Dixieland style. The audience is welcome to participate in some of the Deacons’ tunes by playing washboards and parading with colorful Mardi Gras-style umbrellas. The Deacons have played in New Orleans, at the W.C. Handy Music Festival in Florence, Ala., the James Street Cafe in Pittsburgh, the Hilton Hotel in Harrisburg, Del-Grosso’s Park, Lakemont Park, the Raystown Lake Amphitheater and the large popular events in Centre County. Members are Jay Caprio, a barber; “King James” Ressler is an ex-Navy musician and retired instrumental teacher; Ray Dillon, a teacher since 1970; Phil Ponish who plays with other bands; Graham Spanier, president of Penn State University; Bill Kawa, retired insurance agent and the group’s business manager; and the newest members, Marty Gillespie and Mike Loewen. Call Kawa for band information at 814-378-7234.
