Swashbuckler’ is same old story“S w a s h b 11 c k ■ ler”: (PGLwlth Robert Shaw, James Earl Jones and Genevieve Bujold, directed by James Gold-stone, at UA Chris-Town, Hayden East theaters, Silver Dollar and Northern drive-ins.By MIKE PETRYNIRemember what made swashbuckling movies so much fun:Burt Lancaster swinging from the yardarms in “The Crimson Pirate/’ buoyed through the air almost by the twinkle in his eye alone. Errol Flynn punctuating the stretches of wretched dialogue in “Captain Blood” with all those silly, seductive grins. Sword fights, trusty companions and damsels in distress. The slosh of waves, the roar of cannons. Special effects boulders blown to smithereens. Ah, yes, wasn't it wonderful?’Swashbuckler, a pirate saga set in the Caribbean with Robert Shaw as the chief brigand-hero, James Earl Jones as his trusty companion, Peter Boyle as the evil governor, and Genevieve Bujold as the sweet damsel, has all the unusual swashbuckler elements and not one more.It’s a pleasant enough movie, a straight-faced romance of the old sort, but that “not one more” is rather disturbing. This is the sequel mentality without the label “Part 11.” “Swashbuckler” docs noteven attempt anything new and as a result its •rote-cloning is a sign of creative bankruptcy.Director Richard Lester’s “The Three Musketeers” worked both as a swashbuckler and as a parody of genie because Lester veritably bursts with fresh ideas.Here, director James Goldstone and writer Jeffrey Bloom are only out tomake sure they have In everything everyone expects from a swashbuckler.At that, they succeed.
