Douglas County Free Fair keeps 4-H'ers on their toesJudges name supreme champions• Thousands attended Wednesday's event; but even more people are expected at the fair today and Friday.By Tom MeagherJournal*World WriterAs hundreds of families rode carnival rides and listened to a country band Wednesday, one 4-H member spent most of her day at the Douglas County 4-H Free Fair with her livestock.That dedication to her animals won Jackie Polk, 18, Lawrence, a pajr of ribbons for her steer, Buddy, and her heifer, Lady Bando. Buddy brought her the supreme champion steer and Lady Bando won the supreme champion heifer, a ribbon Poik won last year as well.As soon as the fair is over, we get new ones, and we work on them all year, Polk said. He expects even more on Thursday for the tractor pull and Friday for the demolition derby.On the other end of the fairgrounds, Lawrence resident Shirley Trybom stood near thebumper cars and other carnival rides, waiting for her granddaughter.At the carnival, a $10 bracelet will get a rider, unlimited rides from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today.I usually walk through each year and see what's going on, Trybom said.She had a calf this year, but she got it too late to show it.
