And we made the most of the opportunity, limited as it was by the weather and time. While one concentrated on the biological aspects of the beach, one could not help but be impressed with the geological aspects. The exposed rocks are a strong reddish color from iron. Up to the high water mark the action of the waves has a rounding effect on the rocks. Above the high tide mark the rocks are jagged and angular, the result of breakage and falling caused by the undercutting of the water. Above the jagged rocks the forest hangs precariously as if resisting a fall into the sea.Rain forced us off the beach and back to the car and trailer, but the rain stopped long enough by the time we reached the little town of Alma along the park to permit a quick look at the wide sandy beach that at low tide extended a long distance out to sea. From Alma we drove to Hopewell Cave, noted for its small islands topped withtrees that are totally exposed at low tide. They are given the fanciful name of the world’s largest flower pots, which they suggest. But in the driving rain the best we could do was take a quick look and retreat to the restaurant and gift shop We had to take our pictures the easy way by purchasing a set of commercial slides.According to the local tidal charts at Hopewell the tidal bore was to arrive at our next stop of Moncton, New Brunswick, at 2:55. With Moncton a little more than an hour drive we had plenty of time to see the tidal bore and still do a little browsing in the town But the traffic in Moncton was heavy, there was no place to park a trailer and car after 1 had inadvertently passed the turn off into the city parking lot, and besides it was raining hard. So we continued up the main street passing the Tidal Bore Park and turned off into a gravel parking lot to await the arrival of the bore.NEXT: The tidal bore and Nova Scotia.12 - Mason-Dixonland PANORAMA, August 1,1971
