THOMAS HENERY JORDANAlthough not a native of the Valley it is doubtful if anyone in this section oi the country is better acquainted or has more understanding of the terrain than has Tom Jordon.Tom was born at Marfield, Ont., in 1892 and came west with his parents in the same year. His father settled on a farm in the Oak Lake district in southern Manitoba. He attended Oak Lake and Blair schools and spent the early part of his youth helping his dad on the farm.It was at Woodnorth that Tom met Elsie Smith whom he married in 1917. Mr. and Mrs. Jordon have eight children, three girls and five boys. Albert, who is 35 is the eldest and is followed by Mamie who is now Mrs. Art Graham. Grace was next and is married to Delbert Graham who was followed by Murray who farms five sections of land in the Deloraine district. George is in the army and is serving with the Winnipeg Rifles in Germany. Another daughter Agnes, is married to Walter Larock, of Birch River. Gordon farms in the Bowsman district and Harvey who is the youngest is the boss man at home.Tom and his family came to the Valley from southern Manitoba about twenty years ago and settled on a farm east of Bowsman. Tom says it was nothing but bush and rock in those days. However he managed to survive the dirty thirties providing a large family with a living in spite of conditions and being handicapped from lack of equipment. When Tom first came to the Valley he used nothing but oxen for power on his farm. In fact he is no doubt the last man in the Valley to drive a yoke of oxen. It was no more than six years ago that Tom finally consented to give up the use of the oxen.Had Tom been born about forty years later he no doubt would have been an outstanding mechanical engineer. He has an uncanny knowledge of the intricate workings of a piece of machinery. However, during his youth about the only machinery in use was used in the harvesting of grain.
