Stover now makes his home in Moline,m.Only a part of Stover’s regular group is with him in Cherokee. Spoor of Cherokee has filled in at bass for the group’sappearance here. “He’s 73 years old and just great,” Stover says.The Dixieland Firemen have cut several albums dating back to the 1940’s, Stover said, and recently taped nine segments for education TV’s “Jazz Alley.”A test tape by the Firemen has been purchased by Columbia Records and includes somecontemporary songs done in Dixieland style.Asked if there was a market for Dixieland today, Stover said, “We don’t sell many records, but since last October, things have picked up and people have started to buy us.”Why this renewal of interest of Dixieland music?“Maybe people are looking for truth now,” Stover said.Future plans for the DixielandMaytag TalksAt ‘Impasse*NEWTON (AP) - Separate negotiating sessions between federal mediators and the Maytag Co. and striking United Auto Workers local 997 broke off Tuesday after the company said “an impasse” was reached.The separate meetings with the two sides in the 96-day strike had run for seven days. PaulBowers of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service conducted the sessions.No further sessions were scheduled. About 2,700 UAW workers struck two Maytag plants in Newton and one in Hampton Jan. 22.Firemen include a trip to Paris in August, followed by a two-week booking at the l/mdon Playboy Club. From there, the group will travel to Copenhagen before returning home.
