Casta Iia turns back the clockCASTALIA — Everything was just ducky in Castalia Sunday as clear skies and a warm spring sun provided villagers with a perfect chance to gather and wish their community a happy 150th birthday. From the duck pond to the Blue Hole, friends and neighbors took time out to relax and reminisce about the simpler times. There were crafts. Throughout the day, visitors to the village were treated to a variety of displays and demonstrations giving them an idea of what 19th century life might have been like in the village. There was food. By 2 p.m., more than 400 people had visited the Lions Center and devoured several hundred pounds of pork, sliced from the two pigs roasted earlier that day. For those wanting to absorb even more of the rustic spirit, corn bread and bean soup were available. There were politicians. Candidates running for everything from Erie County Common Pleas Court judge to U.S. Congress seized Sunday’s festive atmosphere as an opportunity to shake some hands and do some last-minute stumping before the May 6 primary. And there was birthday cake. Later in the day, Sesquicenten-nial revelers applauded warmly as Castalia Mayor Carl Riesterer cut the village’s three-layer birthday cake and presented the first two pieces to the honorary citizens of the day, Miss Clara Rohrbacher, 93, and Harriet Snowden, 94.“I’ve been thrilled with the whole thing,” said Ellen Quick, the village historian and chairperson of the Sesquicenten-nial committee that organized the celebration.“I just wish the day had more hours in it,” she said.Ellen Quick, committee chairperson, talks with some residents who remember Castalia's centennial: (Left to right) Harriet Snowden, Elsie Rohrbacher and Clara Rohrbacher.
