At first the family lived at the hotel, later taking a house. Then Mrs. Baur’s salary became $6,000 a year, with a room and bath for which guests pay $5 a day, reserved for her. The investment is said to be between $400,000 and $600,000. The hotel was built for South Bend by the famous plow manufacturer as a monument to the family name and has a reputation of being the finest hotel in the country fora town the size of South Bend, outside of summer*• 1resorts. Mr. Oliver cared little for profit, although he wanted a management that would not show a deficit on the actual running expenses withoutcounting interest on the investment. Mrs. Baurhas more than met his requirements.
