April 27. 1957A group of Laurel and Jones County businessmen have signed a franchise contract with the greatest national hotel chain in the world and are set to construct one of the famed Holiday Inns abreast Highway 11, two miles north of here.Laurel’s Diamond Jubilee Masonite Money has found its way to national prominence. A letter was received today fromVernon L. Brown, curator of the Museum of Money’s of the World, in the Chase Manhattan Bank of New York City. According to Brown’s letter “These are the first pieces of Masonite Money that we have seen and it seems to us that it would be more durable than the regular wooden money that has been issued in recent years for celebrations.”April 27.1973Forty families in JonesCounty were forced to evacuate their homesfollowing severe thunderstorms and heavy rains and strong winds which toppled trees and disrupted power service Thursday morning.Sylvia Ann Nowicki, a senior at South Jones High School, Ellisville, has been chosen by the Jones County LegalSecretaries Association as therecipient for its 1972-73 annual scholarship award.
