By CAROL LEECanoga Park HighCaimed Heal has become one of the best rhythm and blues groups in the country today. Proof of this can be found between the record covers of “Canned Heat,” “Boogie With Canned Heat, and their newest LP, already high on the national charts, “Living the Blues.”Stretched out over these hit albums, the quintet has added new dimensions to blue music. (Bob Bear) Hite’s recurring vocals, exclamations, and progressive use of tlie harmonica distinguish the group’s style from that of anyone else. The band easily projects a new sound recognized as belonging to Canned Heat due to this, and the heavy bass lines of Larry Taylor, Alan Wilson’s riff on bottleneck, Henry Vestine's piercing notes on lead, and the hard beat of Fito de la Parra on drums.“Boogie With Canned Heat” opens with two medium fast numbers featuring the husky voice of Bob Hite. The first. “Evil Woman/* has a deep, steady pace that seems to eject from the very depths of heavy sound.“My Crime,” one of four songs tin the album written by the group as a whole, is chiefly composed of the same relaxed musical and vocal notes, except for a short instrumental fragment.Other tracks sung by the Bear include “World in a Jug” which he wrote. •Whiskey Headed Woman No. 2,” “Amphetamine Annie,” and “Turpentine Moan.” pHite, who has ripened into u a fairly good blues vocalist, is not quite on par with the t(other traditional blues Qfigures in terms of voice quality. Yet this is more than made up for with his energetic performing style, clearly evident both in concert and on records. This unique style can come out into the open even Pwhen a song calls for a lazy, arambling tone. Such an example is “On the Hoad tiAgain” the group s number Pone hit single in 1908. 81Alan Wilson’s exceptionally smooth, easy, and rather ti “old time sounding” voice is featured on a piece he wrote Ulhimself called “An Owl Song.'' Althoigh it has a tifairly catchy tempo, the tisong comes nowhere near t€the successful sound of w“ftoing Up the Cobb try” piCanned Heat's second chart blt;single. $1GUNKYMANWITH NO TIME LIFT TO OiOAAM THE TIME BOMBS CHJNKYhtAN GETS AN IDEA... pcrzawaiy)/ COM//A/C£ 7hffl\PMor %/*///*rj
