SCOOBIE DOOBIE DOOFrom atop a stage oozing with smoke, the Doobie Brothers entertained a comfortable Jeppesen Stadium crowd Saturdaynight. Hopefully, the relaxed atmosphere of the performance will set a trend in stadium concerts.By NORMAN E. HURT Cougar StaffThere may actually be a place in our hearts now for stadiumsized concerts, especially since everything went so well at the Doobie Brothers' show at Jeppesen .Stadium last Saturday night.The concert was orginally scheduled for Hofheinz Pavilion, but since the Pavilion was to oe tied up until the afternoon of the show the promoters tin a co-sponsorship with Program Council decided to move the event to JeppesenThe move made more tickets available lt;an additional 10,000 were sold but there was still plenty of room at the stadium for the rock fans to spread out some and make themselves com fort ableAlso, the concert was scheduled to begin at 8pm and so the crowd didn't begin filtering in until late afternoon, in the cool of the evening In contrast to last summer’s stadium trips, which began in the heat of the day with was too mans in attendance, thisW Wconcert was relaxed and com fort able.One thing s for certain These large concerts klt;H*p a lot of peoplebuss Five separate work crews were utilized some beginning a day early in order to prepare the stadium for the Doobie s appearance PC had a crew, in addition to their 80 ushers, the promoter had a crew. and the band had a stage crew, a lightingcrew and a sound crew And ofcourse there were untold numbers t security people, big time personalities record people,promoters and groupies, andthat's not even counting the audience, which numbered upwards of 20,000ITie show itsell opened with agood-time singer Henry Gross, but there was still a lot of activity onwthe field where atmosphere typified a Sunday at the park with young couples spread out peacefully on their blankets When the Doobies finally appeared on stage, many of the people in the bleachers had already rushed onto the field but it till wasn't as crowded as in previous Jeppesen performances \s usual for the people at the rear of the field and in the bleachers, the band appeared as small figures on the stage But for those up close enough to see well beginning at around the 40 yard line*, the Brothers came to life in all their anticipated splendorBeginning with “Jesus is JustAlright'' and winding through much of their popular material, the Brothers were both highlyenergetic and at times gentle and mellow.With Pat Simmons and ex-Steely Dan member Jeffery Baxter on guitars, the Warner artists got down with such favorites as “Long Train Running.'' from their Toulouse Street album, and “China Grove,” from the Captain and Me album During “Grove,” the audience was treated to the visuals: glaring bombs and thick oozy smoke pouring over the stage The group encored with a 20-minute jam session on a fine “Listen to the Music,” which allowed each member to strike out on his own. wrapping up a satisfying evening of mellow rock Hopefully the trend will continue so that we can look forward to future stadium concerts It the stadium isn’t overcrowded and the concert is held later in the dav.w fwe rnav all fare as well as we didmwith the Doobie Brothers.Frontier RestaurantED t vERY VONDAY' )lt; c oi So.Food Steaks and Chinese FoodFresh Food, Cooked to OrderCanfofFoodt Stylem m1.07 o.s r.American Food Te*as Style747 5522THEHOTTESTSURF MOVIE THIS YEARCome see Hot surfing.
