It has been the happy custom for some years for the old settlers residing in; Davenport to meet together to celebrater their birthdays, and the event yesterday was an unusual one In many ways.. Mr. Evans, still In good health, as one; of the oldest men In the state of Iowa.; Davenport, he thinks, is the best city; an the best state In the best country in; the world. He has lived here continu- ’ ously since 3 $40, coining here from '; Kentucky. Many of the oldest build* I ings In the city bear the stamp of his | workmanship, and it is with pride that he has watched the growth of his favorite city.'Present at the anniversary dinner yesterday were the following pioneer jcitizens: Captain J. G- Crane, 30 years old; J. X Humphrey, aged $S; James. Burnside, aged 76; J. M. Eldridge.aged; 76; X M- Lyter. aged 76; General Add. ] HL Sanders, aged 76; Andrew Jack, j aged i2i and E. W, Baker, aged 71. Many other friends called during the;day, while others sent congratulations i and regrets that they could not be; present. A fine dinner was served, and; the guests enjoyed themselves recount-; Ing experiences of their early days. A feature of the occasion was the reeita-; tion of an original poem by J. J. Humphrey.
