Junior Club Presents Delightful Play for Bethany Children’s HomeAmateur Thespian?, in their most glorious dress of accomplishment, made their bow Froday evening- at the Hammond high school in “Sally and Company,*' and by their efforts, forever put local talent productions on their feet in Hammond, The presentation was given by members of the Junior Women's club of Hammond, assisted by several local club mond, assisted by several local young men, for the benefit of Bethany Children’s Home. The Junior club girls who have some of the most attractive young women of Hammond among their n u m t e r s, have always sponsored many altruistic ventures, but the launching of such a difficult and time-consuming undertaking, is another matter. The fourteen members of the cast certainly put over the footlights as delightful and finished production Friday evening as Hammond has ever seen and the remarkable part is that every one taking part was extremely youthful.Miss Lenore Ellison, well-known reader and this winter a member of the Goodman Theater guild in Chicago, gave her time to coaching the play. Her splendid background in dramatics was put to remarkable use in the presentation of “Sally and Company.” Even the rather new custom of three distinct raps was employed , as a signal for the raising of the curtain. The art of stage craft has changed with the modern scheme of things.Mrs. William Bigger, advisor of the Junior Woman's club, lent her initiative and courageous backing to the play. She was present at the rehearsals, constantly assuring the somewhat intrepid cast, that the play was the thing for Hammond.The Hammond High School orchestra played throughout the entire evening under the direction of Adam Lesinski; the furnitiire was furnished by the Lion store and Frid-uss; the electrical fixtures by the Tri-City Electrical Service company; the tuxedos by the Model, and the services of Philip Berlette as stage manager, Paul Berry as assistant stage manager and Giles Warner in charge of properites, all clearly showed the spirit of willingness in which the benefit play was given.John M. Hestenes of Brooks House, made a brief talk before the play began, explaining that the organization of Bethany Home has been brought about by the need there was for a home for children in Hammond, Since last September,when Bethany Home opened, thirty children have been cared for. The twenty-one representative Hammond women, who comprise the board, are planning a tag day for the Home for May 5, with Mrs. Morse Dell Plain and Mrs. P. J. Mann in charge.
