BITTEN BY A5 RABID POLECATeiAbout four o'clock last Mon-s day morning W. H. Wheeler,foreman of the Scharbauer ranch, had the misfortune while sleeping out of doors, to be bitten through the cheek by a polecat of the large species.Mr. Wheeler grabbed the cat t by the neck and choked him Si off, receiving, in addition to - the bite several scratches, about the neck and face, in doing so.With the assistance of Mr. Jim 1 Adams, Mr. Wheeler killed the animal and cut off its head in e order that it might be sent to the 1 Pasteur Institute.Mr. Millard Eidson, at headquarters, was at once aroused and hurriedly motored to town with Mr. Wheeler for medical . treatment. T)r. M. E. Turney U dressed the wound and soon Mr. Wheeler was relieved of all suffering. and as the animal belonged to the larger species ofskunks, which are supposed tole rather harmies, Mr. Wheeler felt little uneasiness over the bite and returned to his duties at the ranch. But that there becrno doubt or chance, Dr. Turney prepared and shipped the head to the Pasteur Institute, at Austin. for investigation. s Thursday afternoon Dr. Tur-t ney received a telegram, which »f stated that “positive evidence”. of rabies had been found in the il cat’s head.d Mr. Wheeler was at once notilt fied of the result of the investi-r gation and in a few hours was% speeding toward the Capital City t for treatment.eso
