On the ''Keeping Posted page, which gives brief comment about various authors with intimate glimpses of any jpersonal life that can be dragged out of them, The Post Is very personal indeed about Mr. Whittaker, who will probably live to regret a rash invitation he gave, flattering as it may be to his wife.Born on a farm near Earlville, 111., he went to Beloit to college where he was a Beta. The Post carries on from there, Beloit, he boasts, is noted for its beautiful coeds, and if anybody feels skeptical about this he has Mr. Whittaker’s invitation to drop in to dinner at the Whittaker’s home in River Forest, a Chicago suburb, and see for himself. Her name is Adele, the lady you and Mr. Whittaker met in dolorous frame of mind at the door in the first paragraph. The reason for Mrs. Whittaker's dolorous state was Bad news n the mail. Mr. Whittaker immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was a rejection from The Post which anyone who realizes what it means to a young author to make a magazine like The Post will understand would have been really bad news but it was only a notice from the draft board. As the Whittakers have two children, Tommy, seven, and Janet Sue, two, such news could very well be on the dim side. It was, as the board classified him1-A, but Mr. Whittaker rallied when he found the other answer be was looking for was yes, and later the draft board changed his classification to 2-A.The story, by the way, Is all about Chicago and the places you know like the Union station, Chicago newspapers, Mr. Whittaker who is now on the Popular Mechanics staff was with The Daily News until two years ago, and loop business offices.
