Dukes Add NewDixieland SoundBY DICK KLEINERNewspaper Enterprise AssnNEW YORK—-NEAi—Two of the reasons why the Dukes of Dixieland are probably the leading Dixieland band of themoment are1 Thev re not realiv a Dixieland band2 Tht ?y're luckyThese are the frank appraisals of their manager, Joe Delaney. And since Delanev has been with them since before the Dukes acquired their dukedom, there is good reason to believe he knows what it's all about. His first point is that they're simply not a pure, traditional Dixieland band. The Dukes' rhythm section,” he says, ‘uses modern chords. And there are other technical reasons why the Dukes are not pure traditionalists. Their music is considerably advanced I think this is one of the keys to their success The audience may not realize it, but they sense that this is something different from all the other Dixieland bands they have heard '*The second reason — luck — is explained by a question of timingThe boys, he says, ‘ played in New Orleans for seven years, during which time people from all over the world heard them This gave them a ready made record buying audience Thenthey went to Chicago—at just the right time. I’m convinced that any good Dixieland band which went to Chicago then would have made it The time was simply ripe for a new sound, andwe had it ” , .* ' ■ 4 -kThe Dukes, after having made 12 albums for Audio Fidelity, have just switched and put out their first on the Columbia label They made the change. Delaney says, because they felt Audio Fidelity was simply re stating old statements 1 felt the boys could do other things, branch out On Columbia, they will branch. The first album has them Dixielandmg Broadway show tunes. Next they'll do standards and soon they'll go to work on folk songs
