Duke DebutsWith The CSOAlter nearly a half-century lt;ls one of An erica’s foremost composers and musicians, Duke Ellington will make his first ap-pearance with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 p.m.Ellington has appeared in Cincinnati many, times with his famous orchestra, most recently at the 1964 Ohio Valley Jazz Festival. This time, how. ever, he’ll appear only with his trio (Sam Woodyard,drums, and John Lamb, bass) as he guest-conducts the Cincinnati Sym-phony from the piano in a program devoted entirely to Ellington works.Two full-scale Ellington sym-phonic suites—“The Golden Broom and the Green Apple,” and “New World A-Comin,” will be featured. The remainder of the program,will consist of Ellington standards arranged for full symphony orchestra.
