But the area ii\ general has been watching and listening to the Novas for some time.The Novas are Jeff Partyka, leader, vocalist, composer and 18-year-old with a purpose (music, if I’m good enough, science if I’m not); Beverly Beavers, 16, bass guitarist who adds the feminine touch to the band; John Sexton, 17, drummer, president of his West Side High School band, former drummer with the Tornados; “R ’n R’ group” — and Tony Zaffino’s standard jazz combo; and Gus Stangline, 18, at the organ (and a mean man with a bassoon and a clarinet, too!).The Novas, organized in 1963, last week cut their first record for Columbia, “Say You’ll Be Mine/’ composed by Jeff and Gus, backed up by “Sally”.“Kids,” as the adults say, “are all beat and rhythm and noise!” But the Novas are all lop students, and one restriction to their music is that if grades go down in any subject, themusic stops. .Jeff’s mother, Mrs. Frank Partyka, the guiding light and moving spirit behind the band, sees to that.
