He- thinks the expensive. ones ruin a lot of thefood by using too much ice. “Wben I see a shrimp cocktail or a dbfa of olives on a mound of crushed ice,” he complains, I want to ask for an Alpine stock and a guide.”The only* American dishes Hitchcock trusts are steaks and Ice cream. “But I am. not a heavy eater/* he explains, -“except in the sense that I do eat and that I am heavy.BEST SELLER HIS STARTERThe first picture he will make here • la' “Rebecca,” the beat seller, which should be especially suitable to his methods of step-by-step narrative development. He’s working on the script nowand doesn't know of any essential changes that will be made, or who will play in it. A lot of liberties were taken with Uie new Laughton picture, however,“With so many people complaining about stoiy changes/1 he says, “It was good to be able to hold up my bead and aay, 'And how!' Thai story was Unfiimable as it stood because the principal character was concealed throughout two-thirds ofwoman and her influence by logical means/' he explains.*OUTLAWSOBVIOUSToo many Hollywood horror • specialists employ devices of old-time melodrama which make present - day audiences snicker. Hitchcock tries to shun the obvious.it.”In “Rebecca,” he’ll have to 'deal with an important character, the first wife, without ever showing her-at all. “the job will be to get across the 'eerie feeling of the . # # * * *On the stage, a green spotlight; used to bo thrown on the face of the villain. In a color picture* Hitchcock might obtain a similar effect by illuminating the heavy’s sinister pan from the reflection of a green-topped table.Another example: Xn the first British talkie, Blackmail ” Hitchcock didn’t put a long black mustache on the menace, but he did use a trick of lighting that produced the same villainous effect.During a scene with, a girl to Whom he. meant no good, the heavy’s face was photographed ‘under a shadow cast by some iron groiwork, • and It was so arrangedthat for a few moments he worean evil-looking shadow mustache. Thus lie was at once characterizedin Ihc minds or the audience.* * *PICCADILLYPATIENCEHitchcock has the reputation of bring a rapid .and amazingly accurate shooter, although he scums to work rather slowly, “I like to relax between shots/’ he says- “I have a lot of patience, and never in my life have I bawled out a player,” .. A former architect and artist, his outstanding advantage is his. ability to visualize how scenes will look and how they should go together.- He never looks at a script because he knows every word in it before a picture Is begun. He sketches. most of the camera setups in advance, getting just the composition he wants. And Hitchcock doesn’t hesitate to employ mechanical tricks to obtain perspective. A long dining table, for instance, will be built only IS inches wide at the end nearest the camera, and four or five feel wide at the far end.District Be He WiHome Project Achievement Day in Cedar County Will Be at Tipton on April 26WEST l: ments are b trict confer Legion to b Ray wueafr the local po following ci ols, genera!
