Page EightFrankly SpeakingBY ED FRANKSports EditorWITHOUT GIVING MUCH THOUGHT to what has transpired both on the field and in the pre-season scouting reports we will now make our annual predications as to which teams will win major league pennants.In the past we have studied the Grapefruit and Cactus League standings and poured over virtually every inch of copy produced on each team during the spring training grind. But it was usually to no avail since we rarely picked the right team.Last season, however, we did select the right team in the National League chostng the Los Angeles Dodgers, In fact we did right well in the senior circuit taking the Cardinals second and the Giants third. Right all the way.We got fourth and fifth reversed chosing the Reds for the number four spot (they finished fifth) and the Phillies for fifth (fourth) and so it went down the line as we picked the Pirates for sixth (eighth), the Braves seventh (sixth), Houston eighth (ninth), Mets ninth (tenth) and the Cubs for last (seventh). In the American League we were hot and cold. As far as picking the winner we weren't even lukewarm. It was our sad duty a year ago to announce that the Yankees had had it and that the Orioles would be the new champions. Well apparently we instilled too much confidence into the Baltimore choppers and they just hacked away all season long finishing in fourth place a mere 18 1/2 games behind the league champions. (The league champions in 1963 in case your an American League fan and had almost forgotten were the Yankees.)We did, however, hit it on the button in picking the Twins third. Tigers fifth, Cleveland sixth and the Senators last (where else?). Our Biggest mistakes were selecting the White Sox to finish seventh (they ended second) and the Angels second(ni-nth).Now we could play it safe andWe feel that those not selec-ed that could have been on the basis of their fine performances in the tournament include-d Phil Miles and Bill Buck of the Bombers, Gene DeBerardinis and Sandy Williams of J. Covi-tch, Tom Andros and Bob Hansard of Penn Sill, Neil Kemp of Rathskeller and Ron Anderson of the Renovo Jets,Of this group local people probably talked more about Miles’ fine tourney performance. He finished the tourney with 49 points (after scoring only four in the first game) but his defensive play and hustle in every game did not go unnoticed. He also on several occassions didn’t he-stitate to pass up the good shot if a teammate had a better one.Of course the two Covitch players mentioned didn't show up for the big one and you can hardly pass out honors to a consolation loser.As far as the other players mentioned we’d like to comment on one other, Andros. We have long advocated that he is one of the finest players in the area. He can do anything required in the game, and then some. And when he’s on” in his shooting, look out, because he can compete with the best.Don’t get us wrong, we are not being critical of the alltourney selection committee we just feel that particular outstanding efforts during the tournament should have been recognized in some way. ***••*1 » r*; n
