Large Audience Welcomes New Edwards Theatre(Continued from Page 1)each being flashed upon the silver sheet.Mayor Edward J. Bacon opened the dedicatory program with a brief talk in which he commended the enterprise of Mr. Edwards in conceiving and constructing the theater and expressed the city’s gratitude for so modern and commodious a public building.1 J. H. Lord, Sr., then gave the • dedicatory address in which he reviewed the ambitions and achievements of Mr. Edwards from * his boyhood days and paid him a happy tribute as an untiring contributot to Sarasota’s growth and prosper ity.Mr. Edwards briefly acknowledged the mass congratulations of the house, extended in a burst of sustained applause as he went to the center of the stage. He told of the discouragements and delays in constructing the building, expressed his gratitude to those who had had a part in its planning and completion and thanked his guests for their expressions of approval for the playhouse. He particularly complimented George A. Miller of Tampa, the builder, and Lloyd A. Benjamin of Tampa and Jacksonville, the architect to wjiose taste aqd skill are attributable the I many unusual and attractive details embodied in the building. Mr. Benjamin came from Jacksonville especially to attend the premiere performance. At the conclusion of his talk Mr. Edwards read a telegraphic an-: nouncement from Universal Pictures Corporation’s district manager that ?500 was to be contributed to the Chamber of Commerce for The Edwards and the same amount for the Sarasota Theater. There was music of such beauty and variety as a Sarasota audience is seldom privileged to enjoy during the three-h^ur program. Of especial interest was the demonstration by Samuel Ettlesori of the marvelous orchestral pipe organ, an instrument that not only produces the sweetest of musical tones but is made to fairly talk. Mr. Ettleson asked his audience to mentally transport itself to New York and imagine a trip from the northern metropolis to Sarasota during which he made the imaginary journey almost real by his organ reproductions of the various noises encountered—first the puffing of the locomotive and the sounding of its bell until its thunders dimmed to a whisper in the distance then the Ringling Band, with Merle Evans leading, playing popular aires as it paraded down Main street to the depot in Sarasota. The musician then recited his boyhood reverence of the Ringling Brothers when their circus came to town and proceeded to imitate upon the instrument the steam caliope of former days, the modern colored jazz band, and the electric piano of the ever-present merry-go-round of the circus lot. Imitations of a harmonica, of a coloredmammy singing her crying ward to sleep and of a fife and drum corps playing “Dixie” completed Mr. Et-tleson’s interesting preliminary program. The Sarasota Male (thorns, with Bryant Pemberton directing, sustained their previously won laurels and won new admirers hs they gave several excellent selections, after each of which they were cimpiled to respond to encores. Another pleasing vocal offering was a solo number by Mrs. Louise Philip, a melody, unfamiliar to the writer’s ear, which was especially suited to her sweet soprano voice and which was so enthusiastically received that she graciously responded with its repetition with organ accompaniment.Preceding the showing of the evening’s feature picture the world-famous Czecho-Slovakian band, appearing through the courtesy of John Ringling, gave such a concert as has won them unlimited praise during their stay here among the thousands from over the west coast who have heard them play and who regret the approaching date of their departure.A complete review of “Skinner’s Dress Suit,” a familiar stage piece, would be unfair to the many who will see this uproariously funny comedy on its second showing today. It was a fitting introductory film offering for the new theater, full of hilarious situations and clever subtitles. Reginald Denny undoubtedly wins new followers in the lead of this Universal production and is supported by an lent cast including the charming Laura LaPlante a new luminary of the film world. One of those funny Aesop’s Fable reels in which cats, nfTce and dogs disport themselves under the touch of a cartoonist of imagination and humor, almost as if they wrere humans, was an added feature of the picture section of the program.Overland Enters Sarasota With Sales, ServicePrepared to give car owners the utmost in service, the Sarasota Overland company has opened up on Central avenu with J. T. Conley as manager. The company has a full line of the popular Overland and Willys-Knight cars, in both the four and six models.HELD FOR MURDERMIAMI, Fla., April 10.—(AP) — J. D.
