With settings asweird, perhaps, as any that have everbefore found their way on the screen, and « plot a* supernatural as only Old.lt;|ld legend can be, the picture stands out distinct from the usual run ,.6f “movies.” ,The story centres around the ponderous, awesome creature, modeled of earth and clay, which, according to the ancient legend of the Middle Ages in Prague, Bohemia, can 'be brought to life only fn times of great danger and stress to the Jewish race. The mystic word, long since forgotten, must needs be rediscovered and pinned to the breast of the clay monster. That accomplished, the great creature, although never endowed wdth actual intelligence. was able to roam about anddo the bidding of the ancient rabbi and his followers.Although the picture itself is fascinating enough, many who visit the 8tan-ton will take a great pleasure in studying the vagaries of the silent, horrible monster who stalks to and fro. minus human intelligence, yet endowed with a wistful longing to mingle w'ith human beings. The grottoes, inhabited caverns and dark, hollowed-out mountains, will send a chill of terror, and a thrill of adventure through those of the audience who have not lost their love of investigating strange places. But no one will go to the Stanton with the idea of gaining a few hours of relaxation or diversion. The story, as it develops. will hold oue breathless and wondering. It will cause the blood to rush to th^ bead and the fingers to clutch the arm of the chair. Paul Wegener, who takes the part of the Golem, is undoubtedly the star of the picture. He inspires sympathy, horror and in another moment wins loud applause. His acting is impressive.^ Heis well supported by Albert Stein-rueek as the High Rabbi Loew. LydaSalmonova. the daughter, Miriam:Ernst Deutsch. Hnnns Sturm. Max Kronert. Otto Gebuehr. Lothar Menthol and Grete Schrooder also- take prominent parts.
