Orderlies Vital Colt;By IONA BLEVINSIf you've ever visited Middletown Hospital, maybe you’ve noticed those men. Maybe you haven't.Clother in white ,they move quietly and efficiently about their duties — in the emergency room, the wards, the operating room—where-ever they are needed. They are orderlies — men who know' their job and, for the most part, like it.Take Jim Rosa. He’s a husky, curly - haired teen-ager who works at the hospital every evening, except 'Friday, from 3:30 to 11 o'clock.Jim’s father was killed in a West Virginia coal mine six months after Jim was born. Now the Middletown High School junior boards with his aunt at 1G02 La FayetteAve.He’s been working as an orderly lt;since last August, performing such 1 duties as removing casts, handling heavy work for nurses and keep- } ing full tanks in oxygen tents.Does he like what he’s doing?“Yes,” he nods without hestita-tion.For one thing, he likes the people he works with. But his job, w'hich takes him all over the hospital, is important to him for another reason. Some day he plans to be a doctor, and what he’s doing now may prove a valuable experience in years to come.Of course, he realizes it will be a long, rough climb, stretched out even more by the inevitable hitch in the Armed Forces. But he’s used to being on his own, and he’s not afraid of the future.•CUTTER—Orderly Charles Slone frequently is called on to the little instrument in his hand to remove casts. The cutter vibrates and gives with the skin as it moves.OXYGEN TENT—One of Jim Ross' duties involves the replacement of full oxygen tanks like the one above for empty tanks. The tents are in a room on the ground floor. (Journal Photos—Blevins)
