SUNDAY, APRIL 9, 1989MusicPACIFIC STARS AND STRIPESnmwmtomsBy Jim LewisUnited Press InternationalNASHVILLE, Tenn. — It’s Carrie Kathleen Crowell’s first interview and she isn’t even a teensy bit nervous. The 21/2-month-old daughter of country music hot propertiesRosanne Cash and Rodney Crowell, gives an occasional playful “Goobah,” but otherwise let her mama do the talking during a half-hour session. The arrival of the couple’s third child wilt cause Cash to keep a low profile most of this year, but she and Crowell have some good news for their fans. The two have rarely been on the same stage, but next year they plan to go on tour together.‘‘We’ve done some isolated dates, but we’ve never gone on tour together. It’s concrete but hasn’t been booked yet. It was Rodney’s idea,” she says. The duo teamed up for a No. 1 single, “It’s Such a Small World,” last year.17Last month, Cash released “Hits 1979-1989,” a collection of eight singles plus two new songs, “I Don’t Want To Spoil the Party,” written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and “Black And White.” The previously released material includes ‘‘Seven Year Ache,” * 'Tennessee Flat Top Box,” “The Way We Make a Broken Heart,” and “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me.”CASH PLANS TO finish writing an album that will be released early next year.“I hope to have more time to write, but she’s taking up all my time right now,” Cash says, pointing to her daughter.Cash says the material is different from her other songs.“I have experimented a lot with this. I usually write on guitar, but I started writing on piano again. I hadn’t written on piano for 10 years. That, in itself, tends to different melodies. Ill experiment with structure, youknow, not verse, verse, chorus, verse, but writing in octaves. And I’m writing about different subjects other than the dynamics of relationships.“I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I would like to do a song about a new baby. I would like to do it without being sappy about it.”Cash, who is the first female country music artist to have four No. 1 singles from an album (“King’s Record Shop”) isn’t concerned about losing some of her momentum by taking time off.“I’m not motivated by fame or a lot of exterior kinds of goals. I’m motivated more by interior goals such as my development as an artist and a human being. That’s where I get my happiness from, too. I’ve shifted focus from outside stuff to inside stuff. I find myself much calmer about my life. Making records and touring is not the sum of my life. I have children. I have other interests. Being driven (to continue her career full speed) is sometimesaddictive fueled by an interior vacuum. At least it would be for me. I don’t know about other people. ’ ’Some artists have taken their very young children on the road with them, but not Cash.“Being on the road is hard enough on me. I can’t imagine dragging a baby out and moving them every day. I ’d rather stay at home. The road is not that important to me. I like doing a short tour and performing, but I don’t like being away from my kids. Luckily, I’m not the sole support of my family. Maybe I’ve been able to make some choices that might have been more difficult if I were a single parent.”Cash says her children are her priority.“I have always been real clear about my choices. In the beginning, I felt a lot more anxiety than I do now. I know what my children need. I feel like I’m in tune with them. I don’t stay away from them for long periods of time. ’ ’CatsFrom Page 16“Shooting From the Heart” already is getting stateside airplay, and there’s plenty of other melodic pop gems to choose from, among them “Fell Off a Mountain” arid “What’s Bigger Than Life?” You have to admire their spunk, too — they got their record contract by playing their songs on the company’s front steps.CAN’T-MISS PICKS (Other recommendations):“Oranges Lemons,'* XTC(Geffen) — a five-star in my book; “The Raw and The Cooked,” Fine Young Cannibals (I.R.S.-MCA); “High Hat,” Boy George (Virgin); “Something Real,” Phoebe Snow (Elektra), ‘4 Like a Prayer, ’ ’ Madonna (Sire); “Zigzagging Through Ghostland,” The Radiators (Epic); “Hits 1979-89,” Rosanne Cash (Columbia);44Don’t Tel! a Soul,” The Replacements (Warner);4 4 Yellow Moon,” The Neville Brothers (AM); “The Big Area,” Then Jericho (MCA);44Nick of Time,” Bonnie Riatt (Capitol).★ ★ ★ANOTHER SUPERGROUP: What do you get when you mix The Babys with Journey?
