For goodreason.“I went one year here in 1965, that is when the government consolidated the schools and did away with integration so I graduated here in 1966,” Peery said. “They didn’t have a baseball program.“I played a lot around the county and the area and different places and I played one year at Emory ( Henry) and the rest of it I was tied up in football.”Baseball didn't return to baseball hungry Tazewell until 1976. Two years later, Peery became an assistant in ‘78, and took over as head coach in ‘79.Other than a one season hia-Lou Peerytus, he’s been there ever since.“I still enjoy it,” Peery said.As for Peery’s love affair with the game, that has never taken time off. Peery grew up following baseball, especially the Braves, and not just the Atlanta brand.“I've seen the Braves all my life,” Peery said. “In fact my first team was the Milwaukee Braves back before your day. I followed Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette and all them on the radio.“I got mad at them when they moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta and quit them and went/cVsFtesFile phototo the Los Angeles Dodgers with Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. I followed them a while and then the Oakland A’s.“Any more you kind of have to just follow players. Those days where this year and last year’s team is the same is no longer.” There’s little doubt who Peery’s favorite player is.Tazewell product Billy Wagner, currently the closer for the Braves, is sixth on the allsaves list with 385.
