William Dwyer and Rev. John F. Mundy of Abington, were present during the early part of the evening, and watched with no little interest the evolutions of the grand march, which commenced shortly after 9 o'clock, Dr. John E. Dwyer and Miss Fannie McNamee in the van. There were between two hundred and iifty and three hundred couples on the floor, and it was a pretty sight to witness the intricate formations of the march which continued for nearly an hour. At the end of that time, the ball being formally opened, sets were arranged and the first dance commenced to the excellent music of Wiggin’s Orchestra.The gay votaries of Terpsichore tripped the light fantastic at intervals till midnight when the march was taken for the galleries, where tables bountifully laden, had been arranged under the direction of Caterer Jones, who served in her usual good style an excellent supper, to which all did full justice, dancing evidently having whetted their appetites and made the edibles taste doubly palatable. The good things having been thoroughly discussed the floor was again sought and dancing resumed till 2 o'clock.Those Present.Among those present we noted the following, and though we desired to give the names of all, it is readily understood on account of the large number in attendance, that such an endeavor was impossible:Edward J. S. Cahill, Messrs. A. C. Valley, H. E. Mc-Goldrick, J. F. Sharkey and J. R. Murrey, performed their onerous duties in a most efficient and painstaking manuer, thus securing the comfort of all.The gentlemen were for the most part in full evening dress.Fr. Scully has reason to feel pleased with his young men.Aluerman Frank H. Teele looked in upon the merrv gathering during the evening and enjoyed watching the gay dancers form short time.Dr. J. E. Dwyer officiated as floor director and Mr. Chas. E. O’Neil as his assistant, and they were ably seconded In their duties bv the following corps of aids: Messrs. T. F. Rllev, J. T. Doherty, C. W. Isaac.The management certainly deserve praise for its thoughtfulness in providing horse car accommodations at the close of the ball,to carry the participants to all points of the city. Thm rcat convenience was provided gratis,—lo ares being collected. It was a liberal and very considerate act, and was much appreciated by those who had not secured carriages.The arrangements were admirable and were well planned and carried out.The ladies looked a little tired at the close of the festivities and the stronger sex were uot far behind In th's respect, although we make no doubt no objections would have been raised if the affair had been contiuued longer.Many of the elegant costumes worn on this occasion were made by Madame Buckley, of No. 293 Cambridge street, whose excellent taste and finished work excited general admiration.The representative of the Press is particularly indebted to Dr. C. S. Cahill, of the reception committee, for many court eons attentions shown him.Caterer Jones looked well after the huge company, and none were neglected. 6The checking was done admirably and without coufusion.A Great BattleIs continually going on in the human system.
