John Schmid/ Timi.s Photo EditorJoe Herring, Jr., right and BK Cody, left present Garrett Gathings a silver coin commemorating the 150th anniversary of Kerr County. Gathings submitted the art work used on the coin while attending Schreiner University.Fitting 150 years of history onto the face of a coin was a quite a challenge. The task was won by Garret Gathings, a 22-year-old Schreiner University junior, whose design ideas were picked for a commemorative coin and logo that is being used to mark Kerr County’s 150th anniversary. The Kerrvillle Chamber of Commerce enlisted Schreiner University professor David Smith’s graphic class to create the design. In November,Joe Herring Jr., the spokesman for the 150th anniversary celebration, approached the 11 member class as any client would, explaining what the chamber wanted to see in the designs it would use to promote the 2006 sesquicentennial events.‘‘What we were looking for was something that would represent the beginnings of our community,” Herring said. “I thought Garrett s was a great entry. ”One side of the coin, which Gathings designed, shows tools for cutting cypress shingles, a landscape scene with cypress trees and hills and a building that Gathings described as a work shed. The other side has a silhouette of the county’s border with “1856 to 2006” beneath it. Celebrating the 150th Anniversary” is in bold, and Keri County” appears at the center of the coin.Designing a coin was a first for Gathings, who has designed numerous logos. He said he approached the project just as he would any other, starting with getting to know his client, which in this case might as well have been all of Kerr County.“Ttying to understand the client is always one of the biggest challenges. I took the same approach that I always do, research and finding the most information as possible, Gathings said.1 250K
