Police Use Tear Gas On Augusta ManAUGUSTA (AP) — City police lobbed tear gas into a rural house early today, then rushed the place and arrested Merle Jackson, 38, who allegedly had . fired a rifle bullet in the presence of his eight children.Jackson was charged with as- ; sault and jailed to await District Court arraignment.The only injury occurred to Patrolman Benjamin Merrick, who struck his face in a fall after tossing a gas grenade !through a window.Capt. E. T. Bernard Sparrowk and Patrolman Jay Malone searched the house and found Jackson lying on a bed under a pile of blankets in an upstairs bedroom. ISparrowk said the .303 hunting rifle was leaning against the wall beside a bureau in the same room.One spent cartridge was under the bed. Police said a bullet hole was traced through the bedroom floor into the living room below. The bullet was recovered from the woodwork of a staircase rising out of the living room. The rifle held a clip containing five unused cartridges, Sparrowk said.Police said they got a call about 2:30 a.m. from a worn an i who said: “He has a gun and: is shooting.”Policemen raced to the house, which is on the Church Hill Road in northeast Augusta, about five miles from the downtown area.Mrs. Jackson had left the house before the shot was fired and the rest of the family — seven daughters, the husband of the oldest girl, and one son— were out when police arrived.The officers surrounded the house and called to Jackson through a loudspeaker, ordering him to come out. When they got no response, they fired three tear gas shells into the house, waited a few minutes, then tossed in two gas grenades.Sparrowk and Malone, followed by other officers, went into the house wearing gas masks and brought Jackson out. He offered no resistance.Besides Mrs. Jackson, others who had been in the house are: a daughter, Merlene, 17, and' her husband, Richard Goodall;; and Jackson children Vera, 16, Dale, 15, Jean 14, Diane, 12, Kathleen, 10, Irene, 9, and Rosalie 8.A family pet was rescued by police.They found a caged parakeet in the kitchen and took it to police headquarters until the house was cleared of gas.
