Pfeifer, Kuhn pace Hays HighBy THE HAYS DAILY NEWSGARDEN CITY - A pair of field ' events competitors won their specialties Thursday to lead the Hays High School track and field teams at their season opener — the Garden City Invitational, s Sophomore Matt Kuhn threw the \ discus 152 feet, 11 inches to win that event by 10 feet, while junior Becky ■ Pfeifer won the girls’ discus with a distance of 112-10.Kuhn also finished second in the shot put with a career-best distance \ of 49-5.i Liberal’s boys won the team title,' outscoring runner-up Garden City 249-93. The girls' race was much tighter, with Garden City defeating1 Liberal by 11 points, 126-115.2 Hays High’s boys were fourth in r team scoring, while the girls were7 fifth.e Other leaders for the HHS boys8 were sophomores Jeremy Lutz and ’’ Troy Hackney.- Lutz was the runner-up in the 100-^ meter dash and also ran the firsti. leg on the 400-meter relay that fin-* ished third,1- Hackney medaled in both hurdles races, finishing second in the 110-meter highs and third in the 300-meter intermediates..7 Lutz and Hackney also helped the » 1,600 relay finish fourth.Senior Chad Arasmith and junior Tyler Herreman also ran on both I the 400 and 1,600 relays.lt;.
