He declared that $100,f00 had been appropriated for the rehabilitation of Elks in Manila and for 'a new home there. Dr. Barrett will fly to Manila with a check for that amount and messages- of gratitude and sympathy to the Elks there as soon as General MacArthur wires him to come.Dr. Barrett also spoke of the work for the poor and destitute and said that $3,000,000 had been spent on this cause this year. He told of the Elks National old mens’ home at Bedford, Va.Educational opportunities are afforded through Elks lodges, there is a comprehensive hospital' program, plans for which include expenditure of well over a half-a-million dollars during the next 12 months for the comfort and entertainment of veterans in Army and Navy hospitals. These and other Christian endeavors all round out programs of the order for humanity.Dr. Barrett was introduced by Ned Rightor, past grand exalted ruler, who in turn was presented by Sidney Freudenstein, New Orleans Elk, who was responsible for the visit of the ranking official. Mr. Rightor praised Dr. Barrett for his work for Elkdom.Touching on local phases he said that he had heard of the program for a memorial to those in the armed forces as contemplated through the Greater Biloxi War Memorial Drive and that this was iu-t “eood sound common sense.”
