Russell.Wiekwire Young. 'Sam J. Unger.John Weiler.John C. Schmidt.Elkhart has 22 saloons.Aimed at Free Lunch.Fourteen Elkhart restaurant owners petitioned the board that in granting liquor licenses to Elkhart applicants -that the privilege of serving lunch in saloons be denied. A petition signed by 14 liquor dealers was offered asking the commissioners to restrict the lunch privilege to “cold lunch’’. Those who signed the petition were John H. Weiler, John W. Scarlett, Potts Schumm, F. J. Rowe, Morris Cole, Thomas De Shone, Wiekwire Young, Alphonse Krafft, Burt Daynuff, Hoetger Rose, George E. Sherman (Bueklen hotel), Charles Dotson, Albert AT ^Naiimann and Samuel J. Unger.After listening to remarks by Ira H. Church, an Elkhart lawyer, who appeared for the restauraut owners; and several others, the board granted the 16 licenses with the privisco incorporated that serving of lunch shall be restricted to “cold lunch/’ It is claimed by saloonist£ , who desire to deal 'in hot lunch that there is no provision in the statute for violations of such on .order as the commissioners have made. The Lewis Tracy saloon has been dealing extensively in hot lunch and denial of the privilege, will, it is estimated, cost the owner much money. Whether he will ignore the commissioner s’ order remains to be seen. The Edward Dalka saloon has also had a profitable and very popular hot lunch department.Elkhart restaurant owners declare that serving of hot lunch in saloons is costing the* restaurant business much ..ifatronaae.
