C. J. Hildreth.“The Lnw of Husband and Wife,”is (he title of a clear, concise littlemanual by Leila Robinson Sawtelle,LL.B., who was recently admitted to 7 •practice in the Supreme Court at Washington, D. C.A general idea of common law is given in the first half of the book, while the second half is devoted to statutory enactments of the different states and territories. It is a book all women should possess and understand, particularly those alxmt to enter the married state, for, as the author says, “it is at her marriage that a woman walks into a complicated legal net whose meshes entangle her the more closely with every step she takes, unless she is led intelligently by the guide whose name is Know ledge.Wo have concluded that we can present no more interesting matter to our readers this week than to give them the chapter on Abstract of Statutes for Alabama. These enactments are such as were in force to June, 1889, and are those made by the state to supplement the common law, w hich underlies all s]ecial legislation:lojdham. explains how little ones of five and seven take the first steps in woodworking, using a bracket saw andplane, a file, and sand paper in themanufacture of such articles as key-labels, pointers and star-shaped silk-winders. Mrs. Stoekham savs: “it is*a remarkable fact that a child will make more perfect articles than a grown person unaccustomed to tools.” This fact to us is more conclusive than remarkable. In kindergarten work the average child will do better at five than at seven; the perceptive faculties being so keen and sharp. This is especially true of invention. Another good article is “Kindergarten as a preparation for school; “the “Standpoint of an Outside Observer,” is another; in fact the magazine has gained new strength from its summer vacation.toVVIWIFE S LEGAL STATUS.The law concerning married women was radically changed b}- an act passed in 1887. As it stands now . all property of any kind owned by a woman at marriage, or which comes to her after marriage in any way, constitutes her separate estate. She may dispose of it by will, but not by deed or other conveyance, unless her husband is insane, or has abandoned her, or is nonresident in the state, or is imprisonedfor a term of more than two years, in*any of which cases she may conveyM ' v ‘ V I f | 'VM :-W^$ * ^ v Jher property alone. Her separate es tate is liable on claims for family necessaries, but not for her husband’sdebts. A husband is not liable for his wife’s debts contracted lofore marriage, or after marriage if he consented in writing to her contracting such debts, in which case she and her property ouly are liable. Her earnings and damages for personal injuries be-She may sue and be sued alone. She can outer into business or trade relations in her own name if she files her husband’s written consent in the Probate Court in the county of their residence; lmt if he is insane, non resident, or has abandoned her, his consent is not necessary.•»HuMlmnd and wife mav contract di-rectlv with each other, but subject to the usual rules of law that govern Iversons in confidential relations. But the w ife cannot Ixn'ome her husband ssurety, either directly or indirectly.* ** T . .+A woman s marriage revokes her will previously made. Women are of age at twenty-one, but may marry without parent\ consent and may make a willof personal property at eighteen. As one numlMT of the North American Review succor Is another, its title to the place universally accorded to it among the periodicalof the same as, par excellence, the enlightener of the public mind upon the great questions which engage attention from month to month becomes, if possible, more and more (dear.
