Local Residents Recall Indian Burial Ground North of NormalThe section of the city in which (parts of a man's skeleton were!found by a city street crew onWednesday was an Indian burialground about 60 years ago, it wasrevealed today by C E. Wert, 536Strongs avenue, and L C Rowe, Sr, 218 Superior avenue,Mr. Wert said an area in the section north of Normal avenue and east of Reserve street, known as Warren's grove and the old stonequarry, was set aside as an Indian camping ground and was at times used by tribes of Indians numbering as high as a thousand who weie migrating to reserves then bemg established for them in Wisconsin and tther states.Epidemics often hit the migrating Indians, Mr. Wert said, and once, he recalls, a large number of them died from a scarlet fever epidemic which they suffered while encamped in Warren's grove They were buriedon the ground set aside for them, Mr Ws-rt said, and wooden struc-j tures built around the plot m which'j they were buried. It is possible, he | said, the post stubs uncovered by the city street crew yesterday when the skeleton was found were a part of this wooden structure. For a number of years thereafter a part of the Warrant gt ove section was used as a dumping ground, Mr. Wert continued, and it is probably that the part of a man's boot or shoe which was found yesterday had been placed there as rubbishWarren's grove was an area of tall, straight pines ami thickly populated with small game It was often icferred to by the Indians as iheir happy hunting ground/' a name which is usually applied to the Indian's hereafter.Mr. Rowe said that parts of Indian blankets and other equipment used by them has been uncovered in the vicinity of North Reserve street from time to time He also vancd the theory that the bones found yesterday were those of an Indian. He said he knew the area j had once been used as an Indian 1 bunal ground.
