Gilbert Porter, the colored peanut vender, living in the Hunt block in East Main street, was taken before the mayor Friday evening on a charge of assault and battery. The complaint was filed by Maria Grigsy, a colored fortune teller living in the same house with Porter. She says that while packing her trunk, preparatoryto leaving the city, she was accused by Porter of putting in clothes which did not belong to her. She continued, however, to pack the clothes, and Porter caught her by the wrist. In the struggle which followed Porter bit the hand of the woman until the skin was broken. The mayor fined Mr. Porter $6 and costs.
