Directors Resent Reflections on Unnamed Members in Divorce Suit,As a penalty for bringing the name of the exclusive Calumet Club into his suit for divorce, Owen Burns of Chicago and New York has been asked by the directors to resign his membership, provided the reports of his allegations against unnamed members of that body are correct. Mr. Burns will arrive in Chicago to-day at 4:.‘i0 p. m.A letter stating the position taken by the directors was mailed to Mr. Burns yesterday by Dr. Thomas A. Woodruff, president of the club. The writer gives Mr. Burns the beuelit of any doubt as to the correctness of the reports telegraphed from New York. If, however, the reports are accurate, the letter makes it clear that his resignation is desired.President Woodruff was instructed by the directors to send the communication at a special meeting of the board Tuesday afternoon.“The petition is reported to allege that Mrs. Burns has been more than friendly with certain members of the Calumet Club,” said Dr. Woodruff. “Such a blind accusation leaves an imputation against all the members, and the matter seemed too serious to iguore. The directors are advised that no such general allegation could have any proper place In a petition for divorce, and regard such use of the name of the club as unjustified and scandalous. We have decided to give Mr. Burns a hearing, and if he does not show that the newspaper reports were untrue he will be expelled.”Dr. Woodruff was asked if Mr. Burns would be able to make a satisfactory explanation by making his charges ag'ainst Individual members by name.We are not interested in allegations he may have to make ugainst Individuals,” was the reply. ‘‘The only question at issue is whether ho actually made generalcharges against members of the club.”The directors could not discover any similar case involving a club membership and in the action they took they believe they have set a precedent.Mr. Burns is president of the W. F. Burns Company, First National Bank Building. In New York the company conducts a “day and night bank” in Fifth avenue. Mr. Burns is now living with his sistei Mrs. Anthony Wilson, at “Burns Terrace,’’ linwood-on-the-riudson.s
