INDIANS’ BONES DUG UPi ♦ ♦Skeletons ot Red Men R nearthed at Mound Cemetery.Remains of More Than a Dozen Ex--burned Today—Buried Prufcabiy Over 150 Yeara Ago.Mound cemetery, the most beautifully located burying ground in this state, was ■ laid out and established over fifty years ago, It was named Mound cemetery (or the reason there were such a large num-bcr of mounds on- the then forty-nine acres, since largely added to.l\-0 doubt it was at one time an Indian burying ground, for on many oc cusions the mounds were opened, skele tons of Indians and instruments of war ■were exhumed. According to statements made by old settlers there has been re- ; •moved from the burin! plat over two hundred skeletons of Indians.Late yesterday afternoon further proof that it was once an Indian cemetery came to light in the gruesome unearth-ing of between twelve and fifteen skelc- | tons, all of Indians. Men have been en- j gaged making excavations for a sidewalk ; on West street, on the west side of the 1 cemetery. Suddenly hones were struck. Perfect skeletons were dug out, there being the skulls, ribs, thigh and log bOTlOS. backbone, and in fact everything except the finger bones were there. Most of them crumbled away, however, when touched, but many hones are in n good state of preservation. Others could be seen in the caiil). but it was not necessary to lake them out.Superintendent Doolin states that he carefully examined the bones and is positive thev arc those of Indians and. that the red men died and were buried 150 years ago. All wero arranged side by side, evidence that the savages who roamed these parts more than a- century and a half ago, took great care in burying their dead, brothers.• It was noticed that the teeth of the skeletons were round and fiat on top, undoubtedly evidence that the Indians ate coarser foods which compelled them ;to use their teeth more, than is the case nowadays when the eating of coffer foods does not wear the teeth down. The hones attracted considerable attention and many gathered to gnze at the same.n.DACOP-C AWAY IN SOUTH
