inTrialon ShootingGerald (Jerry) Walsh of Carroll, who is charged with assault with intent to commit murder took the witness stand in his own defense as testimony continued in District Court hereFriday morning.«Walsh has been accused of shooting Robert J. Luchtel the evening of May 2 at the Montgomery Ward Store in Carroll. Luchtel was the store manager at the time of the incident.Walsh testified he and his former wife Rose were married on January 15, 1966 and were divorced on January 5, 1973. He said Mrs. Walsh was the one who had instituted the action and he was informed she had filed for divorce when he was delivered the papers by a sheriff while working inAmes.He said he called his wife thatevening to ask if they could talk 11 over the situation that weekend and attempt to reach an agree-/jment. Walsh said that during s I the weekend discussion, his wife agreed to see if things could* .. r,be worked out on a six-month trial basis.Walsh also testified that he had heard about a possible affair between his wife and Luchtel, but when he asked his wife about a possible affair, she denied it.Walsh then refuted Mrs. Walsh’s testimony given Tuesday about alleged incidents of violence directed to her by Walsh.Walsh then turned to describing his activities on May 2. He saidl he went to work at the John Scharfenkamp farm near Lidderdale, as usual, stopping at the tavern in Lidderdale for coffee.
