Coxivictod of Hlgamy.William S. Suttoo, alias Samuel J. Sutton, was conv cted of bigamy in tbe Criminal Court yesterday. It was stated la tbe testimony that Sutton was married to Miss Alice G Shamcr in 1884, by Rev. J. A. Vance and that they separated in 1887. In August, 1890, Sutton instituted proceedings for a divorce. Sutton married Miss Sarah E. Howard January 19, 1892.The accused testified that Mr. A. P. Jump,his attorney in the divorce proceeding's, toldhim before the second marriage that he wasdivorced, and that in the belief that he was afree man he married again. Mr. Jump was111 and was not put upon the witness stand.A statement from him. which was admittedas testimony, was to the effect t hat Mr. Jumpnever toid Sutton the divorce had bt*engranted. The jury found Sutton guilty andrecommended him to the mercy of the court.Sentence whs suspended pending a motion for a new trial.Judge Harlan increased Sutton’s bail from SI,(XX) to $2,000. Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner, mother of !he prisoner, gave the necessary I 1 security and Sutton was released. The pen- j 1 aity for bigamy is not less than eighteen months nor more than nine years in the penitentiary. Both of Sutton's wives were in court.
