The Sun ShinesPy HELEN UNDER UDSTOUGHTON — In a blaze of welcome sunshine, after rain showers had dampened the Friday and Saturday programs. Stoughton’s annual “Syttende Mai” festival attracted one of the largest crowds in the history of the event Sunday for the traditional two-hour parade along thelength of Main Street.Police Chief Robert Everson estimated the attendance at more than 100,000.Besides jammimg Main St., the crowd overflowed into the Wisconsin Rosemaling exhibit at the First Lutheran Church, the arts and crafts exhibit in the Community Building, and the his-on Syttende Mai^ .*#:'w,%v. :-.v/ »• ..... .... ..... . v......mt-i:: M ’•torical museum.A record attendance was reported at the Sons of Norway smorgasbord, the Lions club pancake breakfast, and other eating spots.Trophies for the best entries in Sunday’s parade went to the Sun Prairie High School Band, 1st; Oregon High School Band, 2nd;and Milton High School Band, 3rd;The Girl Scouts took first Triangle Troopers 4-H club, 2nd and the Stoughton F.F.A., 3rd, in the youth division.The Stoughton State Bank was first in the commercial division, with Reel’s and Holtan, 2nd and the Norseman Supper Club, 3rd.vv -• -•’ . .* v.'! v - •_*■: • ~The Stoughton Baptist Church.took top honors, the Sons of Norway, 2nd and the Fort Fest float, 3rd, in the civic division.Featured in the parade were the ugliest trollsThey included Irene Carey, who won first place in the junior high school contest, Carolyn Pieper, 2nd place, and Scott Swenson, 3rd place.
