DYING AT HOMEWhile Husband No. 1 Is Suing Her For DivorceAND HUSBANDNO. 2 IS IN JAILBeside Her Is a Two Weeks' Old Babe and About the Bed Are Her Own Children and Those of the Man In Jail—One of the Most Pathetic Cases That Has Ever Come to the Attention of the Local Officers.Mrs. Effie Eldora Bastel, alias Mrs. Calvin Parrish, who is charged with bigamy in a complaint filed Monday in the LaPorte circuit court, as told elsewhere in Herald, lies dying at the house at 114 Scott street where the couple had been living for some time. She is under the care ofDr. O. L. Sutherland, who expresses the fear that she cannot recover. Beside her is a tfro weeks’ old babe and with her are ,her own children and Parrish’s children by a former marriage. The father of the babe 's locked in a cell at the county jail, but Tuesday the mother expressed a desire to see him and so in the charge of Deputy Sheriff Anstiss the man was taken to the house. The scene was a pathetic one as the man knelt beside the bed of the woman and endeavored to comfort her in her last hours. Mr. Anstiss, used to strong scenes, was so touched by the devotion of the couple that he was compelled to leave the room. Neighbors are endeavoring to do what they can for the woman but soon there will he no further need of asistance, excepting for the care of the babe and the other children. To make the case all the harder for the woman, her first husband, Samuel Bastel, that mornin, through Attorney H. W. Worden, brought suit in the circuit court for a divorce. The plaintiff says that he was married to the defendant on Jan. 1887, and that they lived together until in April, 1903, when they separated. Bastel charges that his wife abandoned hftnand has not lived with him since. He makes no reference to the fact that she has been living with Parrish, to whom she is supposed to be married and as a result of which proceedings were brought Monday against them by the state. Bastel asks for the custody of their five children: Jamesaged 10; Louis, aged 15; William, aged 13; Clarence, aged 8. and Harry, aged 6.
