Ken Thomas of Elyria Catholic fouled out of Friday night’s game with 42 seconds left, only 21 seconds after his basket put the Panthers ahead 62-60.But did he legally foul out?I After the game statisticians in then press box, along with all three C-T j reporters and ail the other media, showed Thomas with only four fouls. A check with the play-by-play also showed him with just four. t The official box score shows ThomasI with four fouls.s Play-by-play records showed thatt Jimmy Harris, who wore Number 53, had three fouls. But he apparently was f credited with only two. Thomas wore j Number 35.j So, either the official scorer on thej sideline made a mistake and put one of y (Number 53) Harris' fouls down in the C book besides the name of (Number 35) Thomas, or about 25 people in the press box misunderstood a referee’s hand signal.* * *Elyria Catholic had a horrible first quarter, shooting only 22 per cent from the field (2 of 9) and committing 10 turnovers. And the Panthers fell behind 18-6 going into the second period.But after that they played good basketball , In the final three quarters Elyria Catholic shot 62 per cent from the field and made only 13 more turnovers.For the game the Panthers hit 56 per cent and made 23 turnovers. Archbold shot 48 per cent and committed 20 turnovers.* * *Elyria Catholic was called for five fouls before Arehold had its first in the opening half. In the second half the Blue Streaks committed only three fouls while the Panthers were called for 11.By the time Vincent got to Anderson Arena, though, Jack had already obtained other tickets to get into Anderson Arena.A C-T reporter ran into Jim in the hallway as he held five tickets asking, Where’s Jack Bvam, I've got his tickets.* * *Among the 3,376 fans on hand at Anderson Arena for the Elyria Catholic game (capacity is 5,209) were former Panther players Tom Smclko and George Smith who were among the stars for the team last year.In fact, Smith’s last-second basket in 1978 put Elyria Catholic in the regional championship game.Also at Friday night’s game was Bryan Thomas, all-time Panther football great who is now at Pittsburgh University-Others seen at the game were Fire-lands Coach Keith Sooy and Oberlin Coach Syd Scott, as well as Firclands Class AA All-State eager Bill Szabo.* * *Archbold hit on 10 of 10 free throws in the third quarter. Elyria Catholic attempted only one freebie and missed it. In fact, the Panthers got only that one free throw in the entire second half. The Blue Streaks shot 18 free throws the final two periods, sinking 16.* * *Late in the first quarter Archbold made a basket and then had a player fouled It appeared to everyone that a Blue Streak player had touched the ball above the rim, which would have nullified the basket for offensive goal interference.* * *In Elyria Catholic's hot streak, starting in the closing seconds of the third quarter, the Panthers hit on seven ' straight shots, missed two before getting a rebound basket which started a string of six more goals in as many attempts. And, except for the rebound basket, all of the shots in the fourth quarter were from outside.The referee thought the same thing as he signaled that the basket was no good. However, Archbold protested and after a long conference, the referee changed his decision, awarding the basket as well as calling the foul.Archbold thus had a chance at a tour-point play. The shooter missed one of the free throws, though, making it only a three-point play.* * ** * *Jack Byam, father of Panther starter Bret Byam and owner of the Joe Shop on Cleveland Street, not only bought an advertisement for display on the Anderson Arena scoreboard for his own business, but persuaded 13 other Elyria firms to add their messages.With that much revenue brought in to host Bowling Green State University you would have thought in appreciation school officials might have given Jack a reserve seat.Instead, he almost didn’t get to see the game. Jack left the tickets for his family at home in Elyria. He made a quick call to have someone bring the tickets.Guess who brought them?It was former Midview High coach Jim Vincent, who just a year ago was directing the Middies against the Pan-thers.When the game ended, two Elyria Catholic players had five fouls, two had four and two had two. Archbold had no player with more than three fouls.* * *Of the nine players who saw actionfnr Elyria rathnlic Friday night, onlytwo were seniors.Those seniors playing their last game for the Panthers were Bret Byam and Kevin Calhoun.The other senior in the lineup dressing for his last time was Mike Hoffman.Of Elyria Catholic’s 62 points Friday night, 40 were scored by players who will be back next season.Jerry Rombacli
