America’s New Literature is Negro Product■..... ....... ■■ i. i ■ •i The negro is the latest race to *j express itself in literature according to Jim Tully, the famous hobo-author, writing in the International Book ReView. The literary output of the colored writers of America, he states, is a symbolism of the tragedy of oppression and i. a challenge to the white writers who have tried but failed to interpret the spirit of the negro.“The last two years have* brought the beginnings of a new literature in America,” Jim Tully writes, “—that of the negro. Many white men from time to t me have drawn a more or less one-sided picture of the dusky race. Always in literature, heretofore, the negro has existed as the white man’s marionette. Too often, he has fallen into the hands of narrow' hate-ridden writers.“It has been the negro’s misfortune to either be over-drawn bythose who dislike him or to be sentimentalized by those who appreei-ite his good qualities. For a white man, the negro’s personality is-hard to capture.“The first requisite in the delineation of character is sympathyand understanding, and when thewhite writer understands so little of his own race, it is hardly to be expected that he understands thenegro.“The negro is the only race in America who tears the curtain from antiquity for h s imges of beauty. Their books are written with absolute honesty.“There is nothing like suffering and persecution to make the soul grow deep. And these men whohave suffered so greatly, should within a few years more be able to grasp the feeble literary torch from the white and hold it highabove.”
