MARINE INTELLIGENCE.Damaged by Fire.Scofield Co.’s smallest barge came very near being destroyed by fire while lying at the canal last Friday. The craft was being loaded with cedar ties and had nearly completed her cargo, when a dense volume of smoke Issued from the aft center of the deck. The gang of laborers forthwith set to worlc to extinguish the conflagration, which was apparently raging underneath and in the inaccesible piles of cedar, but all these attempts proved futile. The sides of the barge were then perforated with holes and an effort made to sink her, but the buoyancy of the cargo kept her up. In the mean time the ties were being thrown overboard as fast as possible and the location of the fire readied, when a copious supply of water, thrown by a hose from the tug Kitty Smoke soon got the flames under control and prevented further destruction of valuable property. The bulwarks and railings of the barge was nearly all destroyed, and the deck and hatches burnt through in some places. The damage' to the craft will not exceed 3100, however. About four thousand ties were destroyed. It is supposed that the fire originated from the Smoke, the tug being engaged in transferring the barge shortly before the discovery of the flames. The partly-destroyed barge was towed to S. Co.’s dock Friday evening and a gang of men were employed in repairingthe damages, which were all completed 011 the following Monday.'*
