JohnBy TED ANDERSON Tribune Stall WriterThe curtain fell today, marking the end of a 25 year career of John Weigel with the Albert Lea Police Department.John won’t be idle though, because he is expected to be on hand as bailiff in the new county court as it opens JulyWeigel leaves the police force as a detective lieutenant, after climbing steadily up the promotion ladder from his beginning as a patrolman inIn those days, the department had but one car, and as one oldtimer recollected, it was broken down most of the time.Practically all daytime patrol work was done or. foot by the handful of men working under then chief Ted Lifcson.The department didn’t haveJOHN WEIGELapproved project.Weigelradios in those days either. Patrolling officers were notified of an emergency through a series of flashing red lights located strategically around theC‘Weigel has had more than his share of emergencies, too.John has survived practically everything but an earthquake.’’ said Assistant Police Chief Woodrow Chrr. who worked side by side with Weigel in those early days.During his first year on the force. Weigel suffered a badly broken leg while assisting the Sheriff H. B. (Tub) Wulff in apprehending a particularly belligerent prisoner.The leg has bothered him ever since.In all. WeiRel has served under five separate police chiefs: Lifeaon. Ole Anderson. Charles Heilman, Clifford Bailey and current chief Richard Alstad.He was a dedicated individual to the concept of public service. recollected Niles Shoff. who served as Mayor of Albert Lea for 10 of Weigel’s 25 years: he discharged his duties honestly and impartially in every respect.”Shoff said Weigel was a storehouse of knowledge about the city and its people, and put It to use in his position as detective to great efficiency.It was this knowledge and experience, recalled Chrz. which helped many younger officers. He said other patrolmen would frequently seek out Weigel for his assistance.Weigel earned a solid reputation with the people of Albert Lea during his years on the force.Both young and old trusted John,” said Chra. He gainedM'V ___Retiresthe trust with genuine confidence.Shoff. too. commented on Weigel’s way with the public.He related to people in a manner and method others could not.” Shoff said: he was a tremendous officer.”Weigel was, and still is. a crack shot, and has won numerous trophies as part of the department shooting team.In addition to the many commendations and honors he has received during his years with the Albert Lea Police Department.
