mxWAY BACK WHEN*m-!........... ..... : (By Frmnk Ylndrt)-.’THERE was a time when the flour and feed grinding business of this community, particularly in the small country hamlets, was quite an enterprise. The above picture will serve to recall some of the olden days when the farmer brought his wheat to the mill and received in return the flour it produced less a certain amount of the latter that .was taken by the mill for cost of converting or grinding.The above picture shows what was known as the Stone” mill a grist mill built by Stone Mann in the winter of-1871and operated by water power of the Shoto river. It enjoyed a thrivingpaironage_from_tho..surrounding ..territory. _______________The mill was locaied in the I own of Gibson about two nilleB south'-' east of the Maribel Caves and will be remembered by many of the natives as pood fishing grounds too. Many pickerel and bass abounded In the waters at lhat point. The mill was one of a number of others located on. the Shoto river and its tributaries.At this time the Shoto mill and perhaps one or two others are the only ones left to testify to the one-time activity in this field. Other mills were built but ceased to operate and are out of existence. Among these will he remembered those operated by Anton Krlwanek, the Aldridge Co.. Arnolds Red mill, the Steinbrecher, Schlegelmilch, the Jakesli mill, the latter located on the Devil river In the town of Cooperstown. This stream was also a tributary of the Shoto river.The Stone will was razed in 1912 and the picture is the property of Emmanuel Krecjie.
