McMic'hael of 435G Drexel boulevard. one of Chicago’s society leaders, moie widely known as the former Mrs. Robert L. Tatham, received a decree of divorce yesterday from James G. McMichael.Mr. McMichael is president of the Atlas Railway Supply Company, a member of the Union League and other prominent clubs, llis acquaintances and bis wife's include none but the most refined and cultured people.When she married the millionaire clubman Mrs. McMichael was the widow of Robert L. Tatham, a wealthy la wye who died four or five years ago. She was Mr. Tatiiam’s second wife and received some notoriety at ilie time of his death by contesting ihe will disposing of her husband's $250,000 estate.Perfectly groomed, dressed in the finest of fabrics, young and handsome, Mrs. McMichael rode to Judge Theodore Brentano’s court yesterday to tell her tale of her husband’s cruelty in a $4,000 automobile. Her maid and her son, Robert L. Tatham, nowa student at Cornell University, accompanied her.The entrance of the woman of fashionwafted a delicate and refined odor of perfume through the stuffy atmosphere of the courtroom. Her testimony was brief and delivered in a soft, pieasing voice with nicely chosen words, out of which all the “r’s” were dropped.“I married Mr. McMichael Nov. 1, 1905, and lived with him until May GO. 1908.” she said. “Almost from the first he made my life intolerable. He frequently struck me and, being a large, powerful mau, his lightest blow caused much pain.“His temper has always been most violent. and whenever he lost It he would assail me not only with blows, but with profane and obscene language that was worse than blows.“The end came on May 30. when he struck me on the side of the face with his clenched fist and nearly knocked me down.”Recently, it is said, Mrs. McMichaelappeared at the Hyde Park branch oftlie Municipal Court and sought a warrant against her husband on a charge of attempting to kill her with a revolver. Every effort was made to keep that fact a secret.
