SEEKS i DIVORCEClubman's Suit, Charging Cruel Treatment, Revealed by AdvertisementsSeparated From Wife, Who Has Been an Invalid, Nearly Two Years AgoSearch for witnesses, conducted by means of advertisements in the newspapers, has made public the fact that Andrew J. Cohen/ jrell»known society and cjubman. has started divorce proceedings against his wife. The suit was filed on March 23 and will in all probability be heard in one of the Common Pleas Courts this fall. He charges cruel and barbarous treatment.The Cohens, who are widely known in social circles, resided for many years at 2107 Locust street. They separated nearly two years ago. Cohen went first to apartments at 1229 Locust street and last fall took an apartment at the St. James Hotel. They have one daughter, who is the wife of Andrew Wright Crawford, a well-known attorney.The divorce proceedings were filed unostentatiously, and the fact that there was a suit pending would not have become public had it not been for the efforts of Cohen to get witnesses. For several days there appeared in the newspapers an advertisement reading:“Wanted, information of any servant residing at 2107 Locust street prior to 1911. Address 517 Arch street.”Cohen is vice president of the Merchant and Bvans Company, a concern dealing in metals, at the Arch street address. He declined yesterday to comment in any way upon his suit, nor would he explain the peculiar advertisement. He left tdwn yesterday afternoon for a week-end motoring trip.Frederick C. Newbourg, Jr., is attor-new for Mrs. Cohen in the suit. Cohen is represented by Frederick M. Leonard and Theodore J. Grayson. Counsel for the wife would not discuss the suit yesterday. He admitted that it had been brought, but said that the matter was one that could not be publicly talked about..Makes But Oae CharareFrederick M. Leonard, who, with Mr. Grayson, filed the suit on benalf of Mr. Cohen, said that the libel made but one charge, that of cruel and barbarous treatment, and contained no specifications. He said he did not know whether the case would be heard in open court or whether application to have the proceedings before a master would be made. “That is' up to the other side,” he added.The Cohens enjoyed a wide social prominence. Mrs. Cohen, who before her marriage was. Miss Sarah Mabel Clark, the daughter of a Western minister hat in recent years been an invalid. They are reputed to be wealthy, and a number of years ago had a summer residence, ‘ Caaa Felicia,” at Petit Manan Point, Maine. ,The wedding of their daughter, Miss Clotilda Florence Cohen, to Andrew Wright Crawford some years ago was a social event.Cohen is a member of the Art, Hie Merion Cricket and the Racquet Clubs. Since their separation Mrs- Cohen has resided in the Locust street house. It was closed some months ago, however, and it was learned that Mrs. Cohen had gone out of town for the lummef, ,The Cohens’ divorce suit has not befee unexpected in social circles.
