SW Shutdown Fails To Halt Rise in JobsDespite a total of 900 new claims for unemployment compensation in the Titusville-Oil City-Franklin area, many of them by men furloughed because of theStruthers Wells shutdown, there was . a general rise in employment between mid-April and mid-June.The information was revealed in a labor market report released yesterday by David L. Hanna, manager of the Oil City office of the Pennsylvania Employment Service.The tricity district witnessed an overall increase in employment of 600 during the two-month period, stated the report,Mr. Hanna pointed out that the higher employment figure did not reflect the entire impact of the Struthers shutdown.Although the unemployment figures showed 1.1 per cent fewer persons idle for the April-June period than the March-April period, the report said, the number of workers idle is 2.7 above the June 1962 figure.The increase in the number of jobless over last year, said Mr. Hanna, came entirely in the manufacturing sector. The number of 1 jobless in non-manufacturing isat the same level as a year ago, he explained.The report stated that the unemployment picture in the tri-city area has qualified the market asa “small area of substantial unemployment with the U. S. Department of Labor Bureau of Employment Security.Mr, Hanna pointed out that only two employment areas in northwestern Pennsylvania have jobless rates under 6 per cent.The report predicted that there will be little improvement inlabor market conditions in the Inext several months.
