Commissioners increase costs of Bailey’s water, sewer tapsBy Samantha ThompsonDaily Times Staff WriterBAILEY — The Town Commission unanimously approved an increase in the cost of water and sewer taps Tuesday.The three-fourths inch water taps sold by the city were raised from $200 to $400. The costs of standard sewer taps increased from $240 to $525.Mayor Jack Farmer, who made the motion for the increases, said it was the first increase for water and sewer taps since 1984. The costs are cheaper than other similar towns, he added.Included in Farmer’s motion was an increase of the surcharge to the Bailey Slaughter House. The cost increased from $42 per month to $100 per month.Leigh Ballance Jr., president of Unity Bank, told the commissioners in light of the recent Peoples Bank and Trust Co. and Planters Bank merger, Unity Bank will continue to serve Bailey residents the same.Bailey currently has a Peoples Bank branch on Highway 264-A that is one of the 11 banks Unity Bank bought as a result of the merger.Peoples and Planters banks had to dispose of enough branches tonot break anti-trust laws. They allowed banks to bid on branches. Unity Bank bought two Planters Banks in Seaboard and Red Oak. It also bought nine Peoples Banks in Sharpsburg, Tarboro, Scotland Neck, Hobgood, Battleboro, Whitakers, Bailey and Middlesex.“We will keep the same people currently employed.’’ Ballance said. “There will not be changes whatsoever, just a new sign out front.”Ballance said new checks would be supplied to former Planters and Peoples banks’ customers with the Unity Bank logo and name at no charge.The official change will takeBv The Associated Press%/Spring is usually the time forest fires burn thousands of acres across North Carolina, but state officials say recent heat and drought conditions are now fueling an alarming number of summer blazes.The entire state has suffered from the summer fires, traditionally a slow time for blazes,place in early September, Ballance told the commission.
