The union attempts in the Valley began a year ago when Eugene Nelson declared a strike in the Valley.A 500-MILE MARCH from Rio Grande City to Austin was held to call attention to the union’s demands for a $1.25an hour wage for farm workers.The growers say that most workers are now making at least a $1 an hourand that many make more.The Senators expressed a hope that farm workers can be brought under theNational Labor Relations Act. This wouldgive the union a means for winning a contract without forcing a hault in work.MEMBERS of the subcommittee expressed a desire to see a union representation election called to determinewhether or not the farm workers want to be represented by a union.
